Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser

Bunn Fertiliser is a supplier of Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser; 0-0-11-5-10-27, a product that offers significant advantages over non-genuine substitute products, which do not benefit from soluble magnesium or sulphur and are liable to segregate when spread.

Bunn offers a range of specialist grassland fertilisers for silage and grazing based on Magnesia-Kainit® with the addition of other raw materials to provide an optimum balance of nitrogen, phosphate, potash, magnesium, sulphur and sodium for improved yields and animal nutrition.

Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser is a natural, highly cost-effective potash fertiliser which contains the perfect balance of nutrients for pastures that are used for grazing. It includes:

11% K2O water-soluble potassium (9% K)

5% MgO water-soluble magnesium (3% Mg)

29% Na2O water-soluble sodium (20% Na)

10% SO3 water-soluble sulphur (4% S)

Other trace elements

The high water-solubility of the nutrients contained in this natural fertiliser enables quick uptake, even across a wide range of soil pH levels. This is particularly important for correcting imbalances and improving herbage quality.

How does Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser work?

Intensively fertilising grassland to generate high dry-matter yields for modern farming systems may create a nutritional imbalance in the forage. The mineral levels may be adequate to support healthy plant growth but they are insufficient to meet the requirements of modern, high-yielding dairy cows.

Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser ideally is applied at the end of February or early March before vegetative growth begins. Application rates are typically at 300- 500kg/ha, which will supply 33-55kg/ha of K2O, together with sufficient sodium, magnesium and sulphur to have a measurable impact on herbage quality and palatability.

It has been proven worldwide that feeding  Magnesia-Kainit® fertilised grass to cows enhances their fertility due to a better balance of salts in the bloodstream. Grass that has received Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser is more palatable to the cows,  which encourages them to eat more, increases dry-matter intakes and boosts milk yields. This has been highlighted by U.K. research conducted on seven farms with a total of 2,000 cows1. Pastures were divided into two sections with one side receiving NPK straights while the other used the same amount of potash in the form of Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser. The numbers of cows voluntarily grazing in each area were measured every hour for eight-hour periods. The results clearly demonstrated that numbers were greater on the Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser-treated areas, indicating a preference for the more palatable grass.

Independent U.K. trials to compare Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser with MOP found that grassland treated with Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser out-yielded MOP by more than 10 percent, with improvements of up to 12 percent in second-cut silage production, with improved Na content and K:Na ratio.

Because of its soluble magnesium content, Magnesia-Kainit® fertiliser can help to correct K:Na ratio imbalances in grass herbage. Herbage containing high levels of potassium and low sodium (“luxury-uptake”) can increase the risk to herd health and fertility with associated losses in milk yield.
